The story behind the headlines
The revolution of 1979 provides the starting point. The focus is on what it means for Iran now: how the system works, how society has changed, and why the country has reached this moment.
We’ll connect changes in population, generations, culture, religious belief, spiritual life and political expectations with the institutions and ideas that continue to shape the Islamic Republic. Understanding the government alone does not explain what has been happening to Iranian society.
This 50-minute presentation brings those dimensions into one connected account, with the greater part devoted to the present and possible futures. Original documents—including the constitution—help explain the system from within, while lived experience adds another window into the country’s transformation.
What we’ll explore
How Islamists, Marxists and other opposition forces helped bring down the monarchy—and how the clerical regime consolidated power.
The constitution, religious leadership and Revolutionary Guards: what the IRGC is, what it believes, and how revolutionary and end-times beliefs influence the system and its ambitions.
Demographic and generational shifts, culture, faith and spiritual currents—and how Iranian society relates to the state that governs it.
The revolutionary ambitions, regional networks and international relationships behind the confrontation with Israel and the United States.
Israel’s election and the U.S. midterms: how their outcomes could affect U.S.–Israeli alignment, pressure on the Islamic Republic, and prospects for negotiation or further confrontation—with regional and global consequences.
Why this moment matters
The survival, weakening or fall of the Islamic Republic would carry very different consequences for Iranian society, the Middle East and the wider world—politically, culturally, religiously and strategically.
Taking place after Israel’s election and the U.S. midterms, the lecture will examine how the results could reshape U.S.–Israeli alignment and policy toward the Islamic Republic. Could the next phase bring greater pressure, renewed negotiation, or a different course? We’ll consider how these possibilities intersect with the regime’s capacity to retain power and the changes within Iranian society—and what different outcomes could mean for Iran, the region and the wider world.
