Pastoral Briefing Series

A four-part professional-development series for pastors and ministry leaders

Registration closed

This scheduled run will not proceed.

Pastors are already carrying the responsibility of biblical teaching, pastoral care, leadership and administration. They cannot also be expected to become specialists in every ideology and movement shaping the culture around their congregations.

This briefing series is designed to help. In focused 45-minute sessions, we examine Islam, Marxism, their institutional influence in the West, the relationship between Islamist and radical-left movements, and the foundations of Western civilization.

The purpose is not to tell pastors what to think or what to preach. It is to provide information, historical and ideological context, and a forum for serious questions—so that Christian leaders can think through these issues for themselves and respond to their congregations as they consider appropriate.

  1. Session 1

    Understanding Islam

What does Islam teach? What are Islamism (political Islam), jihad, sharia and the ummah? How do the major traditions within Islam differ? What happens when Islamic theology becomes a governing system, as in the Islamic Republic of Iran? And what should Christians understand about Islam without caricaturing Muslims?

  2. Session 2

    Understanding Marxism

What did Marxism originally teach, and how has it changed? What do people mean by “cultural Marxism”? How have Marxist ideas and categories influenced Western culture and institutions—including education? How much of what we hear about this influence is real, and how is it changing the fabric of Western society?

  3. Session 3

    The Red-Green Alliance

What do people mean by the “Red-Green Alliance”? Is it actually real? Why do Islamist and radical-left movements sometimes find themselves aligned despite profound differences between them? Where do their interests converge—and where do they fundamentally disagree? What does this relationship mean for Israel, antisemitism, Western civilization and the Church?

  4. Session 4

The Biblical Foundations of Western Civilization

What understanding of the human person lies behind the Anglo-American tradition of human rights? How did the biblical vision of humanity—human dignity, moral agency and freedom of conscience—help shape ideas such as equality before the law, limited government and individual liberty? How did these ideas develop through Christianity, English constitutional tradition and the Enlightenment, and ultimately shape Canada and the wider Anglo-American world?
